I walked to the far end of the hallway by the restrooms to call Micah. I was trying to get out of supernatural earshot. I leaned in the corner by the ladiesâ room, which made me realize that using it before I went back to the room wasnât a bad idea. Funny how you donât think of necessities during emergencies until something reminds you.
I called Micah, and he answered like heâd been waiting for it. âAnita, itâs good to hear your voice.â He sounded so relieved.
âJesus, Micah, Iâm sorry I didnât think that you arenât hooked into me the way everyone else is; I should have called you from the car on the way to the hospital.â
âââShouldâ isnât a useful word, but yes, Iâd like more phone calls in the future.â
âWant to FaceTime?â I asked.
âActually, yes.â
âIâll hang up and call you back.â
âI love you,â he said.
âI love you more.â Then I hung up so I could call him back with visuals.
Nicky and Ru were already standing facing outward so they could see anyone coming down either hallway, so there was no way to peek over my shoulder. I wouldnât have minded for Nicky, but heâd already picked up on my guilt about not thinking about calling Micah.
He answered the phone smiling, and something heavy and tight in my chest eased at seeing his face. Heâd already started getting a tan from running outside, which he preferred to the air-conditioned track in the gym at the Circus. The darker his skin got, the more exotic his green-gold leopard eyes looked in the delicate beauty of his face. He was my height, short for a woman, shorter for a man, but I loved it. Iâd met him the night the ardeur had first risen in me, and its magic had thrown us together, created love at first sight that had given us both our heartâs desire in that moment.
âHey, handsome, I wish I was there in person.â
âYou call everyone handsome, but I wish you were here, too.â
I frowned. âDo I really call everyone handsome?â
He shook his head. âNo, but it is your default.â
âIâm sorry,â I said.
âYou donât have to apologize.â
âYouâre upset with me.â
âI was worried and upset that you didnât call me, but Iâm not upset now. Iâm just relieved to see you and hear your voice.â He smiled and I knew he meant it.
âI feel better just seeing and hearing you, too.â
He reached back and took the ponytail holder out of his hair, then shook all those dark brown curls around his face. âCome home and we can do more than just look at each other.â
âWhy, Mr. Callahan, are you trying to seduce me?â
He grinned, playing his fingers around the tight curls. His mother had sent him some new hair-care products that had turned his loose curls into a lot more tighter, smaller ones. It had turned his hair into a brand-new texture; even the scent of it had changed. I wasnât sure why, but it affected me like brand-new lingerie.
